Bitcoin: Metaplanet, Hut 8 move $278.66M BTC – Selloff or reshuffle?

Bitcoin [$BTC] failed to sustain its latest upward move after rejection at $65.4K. It then hovered near $63K.

At press time, Bitcoin traded near $63,736, down 0.32% on the daily chart.

Despite weak price action, Metaplanet and Hut 8 moved sizeable Bitcoin holdings. Neither transfer had reached an exchange wallet.

Are Bitcoin treasury transfers a sell signal?

Lookonchain reported that Metaplanet transferred 3,881 $BTC, worth $247.3 million.

The transfer remained an Outflow, but the tokens had not reached exchanges. This suggested internal reorganization rather than immediate selling.

Metaplanet had not sold Bitcoin in 2025 or 2026. Instead, it raised its holdings to 43,000 $BTC, worth $2.74 billion.

The firm acquired those holdings at an average price of $96,191. Its aggregate cost basis stood at $4.136 billion.

Metaplanet’s holdings were down $1.4 billion, or 34%, amid Bitcoin’s extended weakness. Even so, the firm had not sold. Exchange deposits would change the outlook by adding potential market supply.

Hut 8 also transferred 493 $BTC, worth $31.36 million. It had not sold Bitcoin since November 2025. Together, the two firms moved 4,374 $BTC, worth approximately $278.66 million.

Why are institutions selling Bitcoin?

The two transfers appeared neutral for now. However, other Bitcoin treasury firms and large institutions had continued selling.

AMBCrypto earlier reported that Empery Digital cut its Bitcoin holdings by 76%. The Coinbase Premium Index remained negative for months, according to CryptoQuant. This indicated sustained institutional selling pressure.

That selling aligned with broader capital outflows from the crypto market. Checkonchain’s Capital Rotation showed a $5.05 billion outflow from Bitcoin. Stablecoins recorded a further $1.5 billion outflow.

Source: CheckonchainA negative Capital Rotation suggests that traders have pulled their capital out of Bitcoin and have shifted to more promising assets. This is a major sign of a strong bearish sentiment from institutional investors.

Historically, when capital has rotated out of Bitcoin, the market has experienced poor performance, and the opposite is true. Therefore, if institutions continue to transfer their asset out of the market, we could see $BTC extend the current bearish structure.

Final Summary

  • Metaplanet and Hut 8 moved 4,374 $BTC worth $278.66 million, but neither transfer reached exchanges.
  • Bitcoin saw $5.05 billion in Capital Rotation outflows, while stablecoins lost another $1.5 billion.
